Advocates demand correction to bill related to TJ

A A- A+
KATHMANDU: Advocates said attempts have been made to bring the bill related to transitional justice (TJ) giving additional pain to conflict victims rather than providing justice. "Current transitional justice bill will not provide justice to the victims but will give additional pain to them," they voiced and opined it should not be passed from the parliament. At a news conference organised on Thursday, they blamed that the bill related to TJ has tried to give amnesty to perpetrators doing injustice to the victims. The advocates urged the government to make criminals bear the criminal liability, adding any bill not making offenders bear the criminal liability is not acceptable. On the occasion, senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi opined that the government should not make laws against people's welfare, constitution and international treaties. He further argued that the government should not make mistakes by classifying crimes like murder and rape. Similarly, advocate and human right activist Mahamunishwor Acharya objected, saying the bill related to TJ has been tabled in the parliament obstructing the TJ process. Leaders of the political parties were not seen as honest towards the issues of conflict victims, said advocate Indra Acharya. Earlier, in a joint meeting with ambassadors of the USA, the UK as well as Chargé d'Affaires of Australia, Switzerland and the European Union, CPN (UML) Chairperson KP Sharma Oli said all parliamentary processes should be fulfilled by formulating and amending the act related to TJ. Oli clarified that it will not be justified to forward such important bills through the fast-track method. He said such problems should be settled by rising above the mentality of majority-minority as this problem is the problem of the country, not only the ruling alliance parties. The ambassadors had inquired about the role of the main opposition party as the government was preparing to amend the act related to TJ. (With inputs from RSS) READ ALSO:
