Women’s team on EBC trek to hold programme in Kalapatthar today

SOLUKHUMBU: A team of women including Supreme Court Judge Sapana Pradhan Malla who is on the Everest base camp (EBC) trek is scheduled to organise a special programme in Kalapatthar today. The team stayed at Lobuche on Sunday and set out for Gorakshep on Monday morning. The trekkers' team comprising 40 women is far okay, according to Prajita Kari, chair of Saath Sathai, an organisation that has organised the trip to Kalapatthar. The team that arrived in Lukla on February 28 is scheduled to reach Kalapatthar today and organise a special programme on the occasion of the International Women’s Day that falls on March 8 every year.
‘Women United for Climate Justice’ The team comprising working women from different walks of life is on a 13-day trek organised with the theme of  ‘Women United for Climate Justice’ aims to draw the global concern over the impact of climate change and advocate for climate justice. The Kalapathhar programme will be primarily focused on major consequences of climate change: snow melting and drying of water resources and their effects on women’s life. Besides the event is expected to help in promoting domestic tourism. Various organisations and people from various walks of life have taken the campaign positively, said the organiser. All people joining the campaign have successfully reached Gorakshep with the support of all just one day before the programme has indicated the realisation of the aim of the drive, said Sathsathai Chair Karki. Elite Expedition has undertaken affairs of other management for the women's campaign. Similarly, police have been mobilised for security. [gallery link="file" size="full" columns="1" ids="20461"] However, local residents of Kalapatthar in Khumbupasang Rural Municipality where the programme is scheduled to take place are unaware of the event. It has been learnt that a declaration letter relating to the impact of climate change on the lives of women will be issued. The rural municipality and the local representatives said that they had not been officially informed about the programme. "We have heard about it only through the media," said Tasi Lhamu Sherpa, acting chairperson of Khumbupasang Rural Municipality. The local level has not reached for coordination for the event yet, Sherpa said, adding that participation of the local level would make the programme more relevant.
