Darchula incident: Indian company provides compensation to deceased boy’s family

KHALANGA: An Indian construction company has provided Rs 1.6 million in compensation to the family of a Nepali boy who died in course of road construction. An agreement to this effect took place among the Indian Garg & Garg Company, the Indian administration, members of the victim's family and local Nepali people's representatives. A representative from the construction company handed the amounts to the family of the victim amid a function here, said Chief District Officer Dirgharaj Upadhyay. A nine-year-old Pawan Mahara was killed after a stone hurled from an explosion made in course of constructing a road on the Indian side hit him. He died on the spot. He along with his father, mother, brother and sister was walking on the bank of the Mahakali River opposite the construction site in the Nepali territory when the incident occurred. The incident took place at Dumling of Byas Rural Municipality in Darchula district on Friday. "The construction company handed the compensation amounts. They will be deposited in a joint bank account of the deceased's father and mother on Monday when banks are open," victim’s father Hikmat said. The compensation amounts will be used for the schooling of his children, he added. Meanwhile, the Nepali side has expressed its concern over the blasting carried out by the Indian side without warning. According to International practices, the neighbouring countries should be informed about an explosion in course of the construction of any physical structures along international borders. But, the explosion by the Indian side was not informed beforehand, claimed the Nepali side. "Local administration of both parties should coordinate before an explosion at international borders," said CDO Upadhyay. (Updated)
Darchula incident: Indian construction company admits mistake KHALANGA: An Indian construction company has admitted its mistake that caused the death of a Nepali boy while constructing a roadway. Garg and Garg company admitted its mistake and showed readiness for compensation to the family of the deceased boy. A nine-year-old boy, Pawan Mahara, walking on the Mahakali riverbank opposite the construction site was killed on the spot after a stone, hurled from an explosion made in course of road construction on the Indian side, hit him. The accident took place at Dumling of Byas Rural Municipality in Darchula district on Friday. "The Indian construction company has admitted its mistake on the death of the boy," said Information Officer and Police Inspector at District Police Office Darchula, Rajesh Shahi. The Nepali side held a discussion with the Indian company and the victim's family on the incident. The Indian side was expanding road on its side along the Mahakali River without informing the Nepali side of the use of explosives in the construction. It resulted in the death of Mahara. During the discussion with both sides, the Indian side owned up to the incident, Inspector Shahi added. Shahi further said, "The Indian construction company is ready to compensate the victim's family." As per the agreement, the company will assist in educating the Mahara siblings up to Grade 12 and giving employment to one of the members of Mahara family. Although the construction company was ready to provide Rs 1 million as compensation, the victim's family denied it, according to Inspector of Police, Shahi. Chief District Officer Dirgharaj Upadhyay informed that the victim's family has demanded the company with one million Indian currency. He added that further discussion will be held with Gorge and Gorge, and the victim's family ensured proper compensation. Member of the victim's family and representatives of the security body and administration reached Dharchula of India for the discussion on Saturday. The Nepali side showed concern over the repeated use of explosives without sharing information on the international border. The Indian side has been urged not to repeat such an activity. Locals on Nepali side have been complaining that their houses were affected due to the use of explosives during construction on the Indian side. It has been reported that the victim's sister Sarina, 14, was also injured due to the explosion. Meanwhile, Sarina has been receiving treatment for the injuries in her leg, at District Hospital, Darchula, according to her father Hikmat Mahara. The rocks hurled from the explosion hit them while they were returning from the forest along with their parents. Mahara's body was brought to the District Hospital on Friday night for postmortem. The deceased boy was a grade 3 student at Sarbahit Basic School in Dumling. Hikmat explained, "I, spouse Berashpati, sons Pankaj, Pawan and Pawesh, and daughter Sarina were returning home from high land. All of a sudden, a stone hurled at us from an explosion beyond the river took my son's life. If we were informed earlier about the use of explosives, we would not lose our son. But they (Indian side) did not even whistle." The Mahara family had been to highland for livestock pasture during Dashain-Tihar vacation. They returned home as the school is reopening on October 31. Gorge and Gorge company is expanding the road on the Indian side beyond the Mahakali River. CDO Upadhyay said they had informed Foreign Ministry about the incident. READ ALSO:
