President, PM extend greetings on World Environment Day

KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has offered her greetings to all Nepali people at home and abroad on the occasion of World Environment Day. Started its celebration 50 years ago on the call of the United Nations, relevance of the Day has been increasing every year, according to a message of best wishes issued by the Office of the President. "In protecting environment, we have made required laws and built institutional structures after devising various policies, plans and programmes at international, national and local level. We have made various commitments at different times in this regard. Our mountains are melting and water sources are drying up. We have become victims of pollution," read the message. There is a need to effectively launch climate adaptation programmes, for the use of cent per cent green and clean energy and electric appliances and promoting eco-friendly transportation, said the President. While thanking the Ministry of Forest and Environment, all ministries involved in infrastructure development, provincial and local governments, security agencies, local community, developer partners and all concerned authorities involved in conserving the environment, the President urged all to continue the goal of saving the earth. Likewise, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said the world is facing the brunt of climate change in the form of snowmelt, lake-burst, flooding and landslide. As a result of climate change, people had to face various problems like a decline in biological diversity, interruption in agricultural system and crops, the occurrence of diseases, imbalances in rain and temperature and losses from natural disasters, said the PM in a message of best wishes on the occasion of the World Environment Day. Himalayan, least developed and developing countries like Nepal and poor and marginalised communities have been hit hard due to climate change, according to the message. "May this Day inspire people to ensure environmental friendly behaviour and conduct and to conserve the earth," said the PM. READ ALSO:
