KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has directed the relevant government bodies, including the concerned ministry, to resolve the problems related to cooperatives.

This directive was issued during a discussion with officials from the related bodies at his official residence in Baluwatar, Kathmandu this morning, according to a press note issued by the PM's Secretariat.

During the discussion, PM Dahal stated that the Act should include provisions to foster cooperatives as a means of instilling the principles of socialism, with a focus on collectivism and the interests of society's most disadvantaged. He further suggested that cooperatives should be systematised through the implementation of both immediate and long-term measures.

He urged the concerned ministry and bodies to undertake the necessary groundwork to resolve the problems in the cooperatives, both immediately and in the long term. Noting his interest in establishing an effective regulatory body for cooperative oversight, Dahal instructed the existing regulatory agencies for cooperatives to present a report, categorising the cooperatives as either well-performing, in crisis, or bankrupt.

He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the funds deposited in the cooperatives and highlighted the need for coordinated efforts across all three tiers of government to achieve this.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Ranjita Shrestha, Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal Baikuntha Aryal, and officials from the relevant ministries, departments, and bodies.
