KATHMANDU: The Department of Mines and Geology, in conjunction with the Cement Producers' Association, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA). This MoU, signed on Monday, aims to safeguard the environment by monitoring carbon emissions from Nepal's cement industries.
The MoU pertains specifically to the production of cement in Nepal using limestone calcined clay technology. The signatories of the MoU were Ram Prasad Ghimire, Director-General at the Department, Dhruba Thapa, President of the Association, and Soumen Maite, Vice-Chairman of TARA. The signing was witnessed by Mukunda Prasad Niraula and Narayan Prasad Sharma Duwadi, Secretaries at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies.
Director-General Ghimire stated that this technology could reduce carbon emissions by 40% and also decrease coal consumption. This technology has received support from the Swiss Development Cooperation.
Narayan Baskota, a senior geologist at the Department, mentioned that this technology was first introduced in Switzerland in 2013 and has only recently been brought to Nepal. He added that this technology could potentially save a significant amount of money currently spent on importing coal for the cement industries.
