Govt committed to addressing Bancharedanda local’s concern: Urban Minister

KATHMANDU: Minister for Urban Development Ram Kumari Jhakri has said the government will address the concern shown by the people affected by the landfill site of Bancharedanda. Addressing an all-side discussion at the ministry on Wednesday, she said the locals near landfill site had important role in the management of landfill so their concern could not be ignored. "It is our common responsibility to manage well the landfill site," she said, expressing hope that Bancharedanda landfill will help a lot in management of wastes from Kathmandu Valley. Government therefore cannot flout local's demand, she stressed. On the occasion, lawmaker elected from Dhading district, Bhumi Tripathi, suggested that the affected lands by the project should be acquired as per suggestion of technical team. Lawmaker from Nuwakot, Hit Bahadur Tamang, viewed the long term solution should be sought for the management of waste in Bancharedanda. He suggested that local governments should be made more responsible for waste management. Mayor of  Dhunibeshi Municipality in Dhading district, Balkrishna Acharya, said it is a common responsibility of all sides for the effective management of landfill site at Bancharedanda. Practical sides of waste management should be focused, he stressed. Kakani Rural Municipality Chairperson Suman Tamang blamed the government only made policy but failed to implement it well. According to him, it is government’s responsibility to address Bancharedanda local residents’ need of education, health and employment. The discussion was attended by various public officials including Secretary Dr Ramesh Prasad Singh, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Gobinda Prasad Rijal, project chief of Bancharedanda landfill site, Rabindra Bohara, chief administration officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Loknath Poudel, police officials, people's representatives from Kakani Rural Municipality, and Dhunibesi Municipality and locals affected by the Bancharedanda landfill site.
