KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal stated that social justice is not about reforming a single area. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts and commitment, as social justice can only be achieved through equal opportunities and access across all economic, social, political, and cultural spheres.

Dhakal recognised the increasing awareness and responsibility within the private sector regarding social justice.

At an event marking World Day of Social Justice 2024 on Tuesday, FNCCI President Dhakal, representing employers, discussed the role of the private sector in Nepal's economic development. He noted that a large part of the economy is informal, making the promotion of social justice a challenge in a country with diverse classes and ethnicities. However, he highlighted the numerous initiatives undertaken for social justice in Nepal in recent years.

In his speech, Dhakal shared that the private sector is actively participating in various initiatives aimed at promoting social justice. He reported progress in policy reforms, lawmaking, and institutional arrangements for social justice. He expressed optimism that if implementation shortcomings can be addressed, the state of social justice will improve.

Dhakal pointed out that the private sector, which contributes 81% to the country's economy and 87% to employment, also has a responsibility to promote social justice. He stressed that sustainable labour relations, which are essential for social justice, cannot exist without cooperation and understanding between employers and workers. In line with this, he announced that a memorandum of understanding was recently signed between FNCCI and the Joint Trade Union Coordination Center (JTUCC) to institutionalise and strengthen cooperation and dialogue.
