KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has stated that the State has put in place policy, legal, and institutional provisions to champion the rights and interests of women, empower them, and to achieve gender equality.

In his message of goodwill to all Nepali women and women's rights activists, both domestically and internationally, on the occasion of International Women's Day, the head of government reminded everyone that Nepal's constitution recognises women's rights as fundamental rights. This provides a foundation for meaningful participation of women in the State apparatus, from the Presidency to local governments.

According to him, the establishment of women's leadership in State bodies, their equal rights to property, the enhancement of women's competitive capacity, and the transformation of status quo thinking and other traditional values are achievements in the efforts to build a just society.

Paying tribute to all those who have significantly fought for the political, economic, social, and cultural rights of women, the Prime Minister said the government has prioritised expanding the role of women in State organs in recognition of their contribution to the nation's prosperity.

"Investing in women will guide the nation towards prosperity through family and society, as well as help to build a nation where gender equality prevails," the message reads.

Stating the necessity to make investments in women-targeted programmes more effective on issues such as women's access to education, health, employment, poverty alleviation, livelihood improvement, and social security, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of women's meaningful participation, representation, and leadership development. "It is necessary to end all forms of violence, discrimination, and exploitation against women and to ensure equal access to resources, opportunities, and benefits by establishing the leadership role of women," the message reads.

Prime Minister Dahal also expressed his hope that the day inspires all relevant bodies to work with increased energy and motivation for women's participation, empowerment, equality, representation, and capacity building.
