KATHMANDU: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to address the concerns of victims and depositors of cooperatives. The constitutional human rights body has called for the protection of citizens' constitutionally guaranteed right to peaceful protest and assembly, and the immediate implementation of a report submitted to the Prime Minister by a study committee six months ago.
The Commission has taken note of an incident where protesters were injured by police force during a peaceful demonstration organised by the cooperative victims in Kathmandu on March 14. According to NHRC Spokesperson Tikaram Pokharel, the commission monitored the peaceful protest by the cooperative victims, which included a rally at Sundhara and a corner meeting at Bhrikutimandap.
The NHRC has received a memorandum alleging that the police had assaulted and injured Kushal KC, the chairperson of the National Campaign for Protection of Cooperatives. KC, who was injured, has been on a hunger strike since March 14. The NHRC has been informed that KC's health condition is deteriorating. Depositors have informed the commission's team that victims of 302 cooperatives have joined the campaign.
The NHRC has urged the government to address the issue of victims of cooperatives through dialogue, taking into account the health condition of hunger striker KC.
