SEOUL: South Korea's exports saw a double-digit increase in the first 20 days of this month, driven by robust demand for locally-produced semiconductors, according to data from the customs office released on Monday.
Outbound shipments rose by 11.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching $35.82 billion from April 1-20, as reported by the Korea Customs Service. The daily average export also increased by 11.1% during these 20 days. This marks the sixth consecutive month of growth in monthly exports through March.
Imports also saw an increase of 6.1%, amounting to $38.47 billion in this period, resulting in a trade deficit of 2.65 billion dollars.
Exports of semiconductors surged by 43.0% to $5.85 billion during the cited period, while exports of cars, oil products, computers, and home appliances also saw significant growth.
Shipments of steel products and auto parts saw a decrease in single digits, but those of mobile devices and precision machinery experienced an increase.
Imports of semiconductor equipment, automobiles, and coal saw a double-digit decrease during the period.
