COLOMBO: Sri Lanka is hopeful of joining BRICS+ in the near future, according to recent comments made by Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Russia, Janitha Abeywickrema Liyanage, while addressing the media.
These remarks were made following Sri Lanka's participation in a recent international meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, which was attended by high representatives responsible for security issues.
Liyanage stated that Sri Lanka could reap numerous benefits in areas such as transport and food security by becoming a member of BRICS+.
BRICS is an acronym for an emerging-market cooperative mechanism that initially comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. On 1st January, the membership of BRICS was doubled from five to ten with the addition of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia.
