ROME: The Group of Seven (G7) countries are prepared to commit to phasing out coal in the first half of the 2030s, according to local media reports on Monday.
Currently convening in the Italian city of Turin for a two-day meeting, the G7 ministers are engaged in discussions on climate, energy, and the environment. They are anticipated to finalise their pledge on Tuesday, with a focus on setting a timeline for the elimination of coal as an energy source between 2030 and 2035, as reported by Italian Class CNBC.
"We have an agreement to phase out coal in the first half of the 2030s," UK energy minister Andrew Bowie informed the news channel during the meeting.
The G7 includes Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan, with meetings typically attended by senior officials from the European Union (EU).
A recent report by Climate Analytics indicated that none of these countries is currently on track to meet its existing emissions targets for 2030.
