KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on the government and all relevant bodies to implement the provision of minimum remuneration set by the government for workers.

In a press note issued on the occasion of the 135th International Labour Day, the NHRC expressed its desire for the inclusion of workers from all sectors in the Social Security Fund, the creation of a safe and decent work environment for all, and the elimination of all forms of labour exploitation.

The national human rights body emphasised the effective implementation of national and international laws to strengthen workers' rights. It expressed concern over the large number of Nepali youths seeking job opportunities abroad due to the perceived lack of employment opportunities and workplace dignity within the country.

The NHRC has received reports of delayed payment, labour exploitation, and violation of other workers' rights in the private sector. It has also been alerted to reported cases of violence and sexual harassment against children forced to work in brick kilns, hotels, restaurants, and private homes due to poverty.

Various studies indicate that workplace incidents resulting in injuries, mutilations, and, tragically, fatalities continue to occur in Nepal, as reported by the NHRC.

The NHRC has emphasised the need to uphold fundamental labour rights, such as respect for labour, non-discrimination for equal work, provision of appointment letters, prevention of child labour, assurance of minimum wages, provision of leave and rest facilities, maintenance of a safe working environment, provision of social security, upholding the right to trade union, and support for collective bargaining. It has reminded everyone that these rights are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, relevant UN Conventions ratified by Nepal, ILO standards, Nepal's constitution, labour laws, and associated regulations.

As the world observes May Day or Labour Day today, the focus is on advocating for safety and health in workplaces amidst a rising climate crisis. In Nepal, this day is commemorated under the theme of "decent work, respect for labour: our campaign."
