KATHMANDU: The 27th general convention of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) commenced in Kathmandu today.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal inaugurated the general convention. National Council members from various FNJ chapters across the country attended the convention.

In his address at the inauguration, PM Dahal emphasised that self-regulation should be prioritised over controlling the mass media.

"My appeal to the press fraternity is to safeguard the press freedom and foster an environment conducive to media consumption, while also halting the flood of false information," said Prime Minister Dahal. He urged the mass media to develop a self-regulation system to check the publication and transmission of content that misleads Nepali society due to dissemination of falsehoods, which he noted can foster a negative mentality, disrupt social harmony, or attack Nepali civilisation and culture.

He clarified that press freedom can no longer be curtailed.

Earlier today, on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day and the FNJ general convention, a morning procession was organised at the initiative of the FNJ.

The morning rally began at Ratnapark Shantibatika and concluded upon reaching the National City Hall, the venue of the 27th General Convention.

FNJ President Bipul Pokharel, office-bearers, former presidents, and journalists from various media outlets participated in the morning rally.

Office-bearers and members of the Nepal Press Union, Press Chautari Nepal, Press Centre Nepal, and the Socialist Press Organisation also took part in the rally.
