KATHMANDU: The Swiss government is set to provide 9.01 million Swiss francs (CHF) in financial support for a trekking-focused tourism project in Nepal.
At an event held at the Ministry of Finance (MoF) today, Shreekrishna Nepal, Joint-Secretary at the Ministry, and Danielle Meuwly, the Swiss Ambassador to Nepal, signed the agreement.
The four-year project is slated to kick off this year (2024). The MoF anticipates that roughly 100,000 locals from 29 local levels of Koshi Province will directly benefit from the project.
The project is designed to enhance the preservation of local art and culture, boost local production, create job opportunities, and encourage the development of sustainable tourism.
On this occasion, the Swiss Ambassador expressed her belief that the project, which supports sustainable tourism development and energises the local economy, will be a significant milestone.
She stated that the implementation of the project would make a substantial contribution to environmentally friendly socio-economic development.
Similarly, the Joint Secretary and Head of the International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division, Nepal, explained that the project would increase the tourism capacity of Koshi Province, thereby expanding the income sources of locals by promoting eco-tourism.
