2nd Nepali Professionals' summit concludes in Berlin

KATHMANDU: The Second Nepali Professionals' Summit concluded in Berlin, Germany, on Saturday. 

The summit was jointly organised by the Embassy of Nepal and GIZ, Kathmandu from May 10 to 11, to provide a platform for the professional Nepali diaspora in Germany to exchange knowledge, skills, and experiences.

The summit was jointly inaugurated by the Ambassador of Nepal to Germany, Ram Kaji Khadka, and GIZ Country Manager Florian Krins, according to the Embassy of Nepal in Berlin. In his inaugural address, Ambassador Khadka stated that Germany, as a favoured destination, has attracted a significant number of professionals from Nepal. He expressed hope for further opportunities for Nepalis as Germany has recently amended its Skilled Migration Act.

Nepal is making efforts, including the establishment of the National Brain Gain Centre and the enactment of the Non-Resident Nepali Act and Regulations, as well as amendments to the Citizenship Act, to encourage the Nepali diaspora to contribute to the socio-economic development of their homeland.

During the summit, several panel discussions were organised on themes such as Harnessing Diaspora's Knowledge Capital: Going beyond Conventional Remittance, the agenda of gender mainstreaming in Nepal: Role and Expectations of the Nepali Diaspora, and Nepal's Tourism in the Post-COVID Scenario and the Role of the Nepali Diaspora.

Three parallel sessions were organised on the second day of the summit, including Climate Change and Energy, Health, and Information Technology and Digitisation. On this occasion, a representative of FAO, Giulia Castro, made a presentation on the newly launched Diaspora Agri-Entrepreneurship Programme. Saurav Koirala, GIZ Kathmandu, made a presentation on the GIZ Programme PMD and MEG and how it contributes to developing synergy between the diaspora in Germany and the home country.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Khadka expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiastic participation of the professionals from the Nepali diaspora living in Germany. He encouraged the organisation of similar events on a regular basis to bring together the professionals of the Nepali diaspora, strengthen their own expertise, and contribute to the socio-economic transformation of Nepal.

Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Chiranjeewee Chataut, Head of Internal Medicine at Bheri Hospital Dr Rajan Pande, and Under Secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology Narayan Timilsina participated in the summit. Around 70 professionals from the Nepali diaspora living in Germany participated in the summit.
