KATHMANDU: Efforts are currently being made by both sides of a taskforce, which was established to finalise the terms of reference for a parliamentary committee on the issue of cooperative fund embezzlement.
Today's taskforce meeting, held at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, saw both the ruling and opposition parties expressing their views.
Mahesh Bartaula, Chief Whip of CPN (UML), shared that today's meeting concluded with a decision to reconvene for further consensus.
The main opposition party Nepali Congress has been obstructing the meetings of both houses of parliament, demanding the formation of a parliamentary committee to conduct an impartial investigation. This comes after the Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, Rabi Lamichhane, was implicated in the cooperative fund embezzlement.
An understanding was reached between the ruling party and the main opposition party, NC, to form a parliamentary probe committee, on May 18. A taskforce was subsequently formed to finalise the terms of reference for the probe committee.
"All parties expressed their views in today's taskforce meeting," said NC Joint General-Secretary Jeevan Pariyar. He added that the taskforce meeting would reconvene either this evening or tomorrow.
The taskforce comprises Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Padam Giri, NC leader Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, CPN (UML) Chief Whip Bartaula, NC Joint General-Secretary Pariyar, and Shishir Khanal of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
