KATHMANDU: A team led by the head of CPN (UML)'s Consumer Rights Protection and Good Governance Department, Jitu Gautam, submitted a memorandum to Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Damodar Bhandari, demanding the immediate establishment of the consumer court to ensure swift justice for consumers.

While receiving a memorandum, Minister Bhandari mentioned that the subject of a consumer court has been included in the government's policies and programmes, and since the budget has been ensured, it will be established in the coming year. He stated that establishment of a consumer court is a priority for the government.

Minister Bhandari noted that despite the ministry conducting market monitoring and other activities, they have not been effective. He argued that the establishment of the consumer court would make market monitoring easier and more reliable.

The 15-point memorandum also called for the creation of a consumer-friendly mechanism to end the inappropriate involvement and profit-taking tendencies of middlemen in all types of goods and services.

The memorandum further demands control over misleading advertisements, fraud in prices and measurements, and an effective monitoring mechanism.
