Government's arrears over Rs 1.18tn: OAG report

KATHMANDU: The government's arrears have escalated to Rs 1.18 trillion. This sum includes the outstanding amounts from government offices, institutional corporations, and provincial and local governments, along with their associated bodies.

The 61st annual report of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) revealed that the previous fiscal year 2022/23 saw an increase in arrears to Rs 236 billion.

Upon categorisation, the audit discovered that the offices of the federal, provincial, and local governments and corporations are responsible for Rs 669 billion. The additional auditing liability, revenue dues, and the amount to be reimbursed after settling foreign grants and loans total Rs 513 billion. The accumulated arrears and dues to be collected amount to Rs 1,183 billion.

In the updated arrears, the federal government offices account for Rs 342 billion, while the provincial government offices owe Rs 28.46 billion and the local government offices owe Rs 193 billion.
