KATHMANDU: The 17th Republic Day is being celebrated across the country today.
The main Republic Day celebration committee is hosting a special event at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel. This day is synonymous with the people's movement and their desire for change.
All three levels of government are organising events to mark this historic day, the day the country was declared a Republic.
The government has decided to observe the day over three days, from May 27 to 29. Government offices within the country and diplomatic missions abroad will be conducting programmes and illuminations.
Following the armed conflict, the then CPN Maoist and the peaceful movement of seven parties, then King Gyanendra Shah restored the House of Representatives (HoR) on April 24, 2006, thereby returning governance to the people's representatives. Two years later, the country was declared a Republic at the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on May 28, 2008.
Under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the main Republic Day celebration committee has been established to celebrate Republic Day, 2081, in a grand manner this year.
