KATHMANDU: Norwegian Ambassador to Nepal, Torun Dramdal, paid a courtesy call on Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire, on Monday.

The Ambassador held a meeting with the Speaker at the latter's office in Singha Durbar, Kathmandu, on Monday. They discussed a range of topics, including the relationship between the two countries and development cooperation.

Speaker Ghimire noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1973, there have been exchanges of high-level political leadership and diplomatic visits. He also highlighted the significant collaboration at the level of people-to-people relations, investment, trade, and tourism sectors.

"Nepal places high importance on its relationship with Norway as a development partner," he stated, adding that the initiatives undertaken by the Norwegian government in the areas of renewable energy, education, and good governance have been beneficial for Nepal.

The Speaker explained that a campaign for sustainable development, peace, and stability has now been initiated in Nepal following a lengthy period of political transition.

Norwegian Ambassador Dramdal acknowledged that while diplomatic relations were established between the two countries in 1973, friendly relations between Nepal and Norway have existed since 1950. She emphasised that Norway has provided support worth around $35 million in various sectors in Nepal.

The Ambassador recalled that high-level visits are being conducted periodically between the two countries and mentioned that a parliamentary committee related to Foreign Affairs and Defence from Norway is scheduled to visit Nepal in the upcoming September.

Speaker Ghimire shared that Nepal-Norway Parliamentary Friendship Group has been established in the Parliament of Nepal. He expressed his belief that the visit of the Norwegian parliamentary committee related to Foreign Affairs and Defence would elevate the level of parliamentary exchange.
