KATHMANDU: The government has mandated the use of national identity cards for real estate transactions. According to a notice published by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) in the gazette, starting from January 14, 2025, national identity cards are now compulsory for buying and selling land or houses.

Previously, a citizenship certificate was required for the same purpose. The provision to make national identity cards mandatory aims to streamline the process. Joint Secretary and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, emphasized this goal.

Additionally, the MoHA has extended the requirement for national identity cards to various services, including banking and financial institutions, social security funds, health insurance, pensions, personal income tax registration, driving licences, and company registration and renewal across different districts.

Furthermore, as of January 14, 2025, obtaining a SIM card for mobile telephone service will also necessitate submitting a national identity card. Instead of a citizenship certificate, individuals will have to provide either a national identity card or a national identity number to access public services offered by government agencies, organisations, and the private sector.
