KATHMANDU: In an effort to promote the concept of 'learning by earning', the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) and the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation (MoEWRI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing skills and providing apprenticeships for students enrolled in the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT).

The MoU is designed to facilitate skill development among CTEVT students through practical workplace learning. Under this agreement, CTEVT students will have the opportunity to work on projects within the MoEWRI in an apprenticeship model.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet, and Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Sumana Shrestha, signed the MoU on Thursday. Minister Shrestha emphasised that education should equip the workforce with the necessary skills to meet the demands of the labour market. "By providing employment opportunities, we can retain our youth within the country," she added.

Minister Basnet highlighted that the MoU aims to foster a culture of labour development and practical skill-building by exposing students to real-world workplaces. He considered this agreement a significant milestone in connecting CTEVT students with employment opportunities.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director, Kul Man Ghising, lauded the performance of interns hired by the NEA for various projects. He expressed his belief that such best practices can be further expanded if the MoUs are effectively implemented.

The MoEST will develop relevant curriculum themes, while the MoEWRI will provide economic support to the MoEST in accordance with existing CTEVT rules.
