KATHMANDU: Chairperson of CPN (UML), KP Sharma Oli, has been appointed Prime Minister of Nepal.
President Ramchandra Paudel made the appointment in accordance with Article 76 (2) of the Constitution, as confirmed by President’s Press Advisor Kiran Pokharel.
Oli’s appointment to the prime ministerial post received support from the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House of Representatives (HoR).
Earlier, on Friday, President Paudel had invited political parties to submit their proposals for government leadership by 5:00 pm on Sunday. Responding promptly, KP Sharma Oli, along with the backing of the Nepali Congress, staked his claim for the prime minister’s position on the same day.
This transition of power follows incumbent Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s loss of parliamentary support. The CPN-UML decided to part ways with Dahal, forming an alliance with the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, to establish the new government.
The official swearing-in ceremony for the prime minister is scheduled for 11:00 am on Monday, as announced by Press Advisor Pokharel.
