KATHMANDU: Thamel Tourism Development Council (TTDC) is holding its 28th and 29th annual general meeting (AGM) and the election of its new executive committee members today.

Thamel, a vibrant neighbourhood in Kathmandu, plays an important role in Nepal's tourism landscape, attracting approximately 80% of foreign visitors.

Addressing the inauguration of the AGM, National Assembly (NA) Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal underscored the significance of tourism for Nepal's self-reliant economy. He emphasised the country's untapped tourism potential and called for strategic investments in infrastructure. Nepal, he asserted, offers exceptional experiences — from adventure tourism to cultural exploration.

Ganesh Prasad Pandey, Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), echoed Dahal's sentiments. Pandey stressed the need for efficient traffic management, improved business environments, cleanliness, and enhanced services within Thamel.

Deputy Inspector General Krishna Hari Sharma, representing the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, highlighted tourism as a major economic pillar. Sharma urged collaborative efforts to further develop this vital sector.

Despite Thamel's importance, Khyam Raj Tiwari, Chairperson of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Ward No. 26, expressed concern about the government's lack of prioritisation. Ward Chair Tiwari called for concrete plans to boost Thamel's tourism potential.

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) Vice-Chairman Ram Prasad Sapkota rallied stakeholders to systematise Thamel and promote it globally. Sapkota expressed NTB's commitment to vigorous efforts to attract more tourists to Nepal.

TTDC President Bhabishwor Sharma expressed confidence in completing pending Thamel projects, while Vice President Sahadev Dhamala reaffirmed the Council's dedication to transforming Thamel into a thriving tourism hub.

Today's election will determine the 15-member working committee that will steer Thamel's development.
