KATHMANDU: The renowned 'Kumon method of learning,' which originated in Japan, has found its way to Nepal. This innovative approach emphasises individual learning and leverages technology to empower students.

The Kumon method challenges the traditional classroom setup. Instead of relying solely on teachers, students engage with digital tablets to learn at their own pace. The underlying belief is that every individual's ability to learn varies, and this method tailors education accordingly.

IGC Business Holding, the official Nepali representative of the Kumon method, recently conducted exercises and practice sessions for 1,500 grade III and IV students from United School in Gwarko, Lalitpur, and LRI School in Kalanki, Kathmandu.

Katsuyuki Inoue, Executive Officer for Corporate Strategy Planning and Development at Kumon Institute of Education Co in Japan, observed these students in action. He expressed his belief that this method would enhance students' thinking abilities, enabling them to learn independently and at their own rhythm. Beyond academics, it fosters problem-solving skills and holistic personal development.

According to LRI School Principal Devi Kant Joshi, just 30 minutes of daily Kumon practice has positively influenced students' study habits and behaviour. Similarly, United School Principal Manoj Bishwokarma highlighted the effectiveness of this student-centred approach in Nepal.

Ganesh Man Lama, Managing Director at Incentive Group of Companies (IGC), introduced the Kumon method to Nepal with the goal of improving education quality. While debates continue about teacher training, education policies, curricula, and textbooks, the focus on mental training and student improvement remains crucial.

The Kumon method leverages AI to evaluate students' daily activities. By analysing their minds' usage patterns, Kumon staff can provide targeted feedback to enhance cognitive skills. It's like optimising the 'operating system' of young minds.

Beyond Nepal, the Kumon method has been successfully implemented in various states across the United States and several European countries. Despite being considered financially expensive, it has been made accessible in Nepal at an affordable price, it is said.
