KHOTANG: Khotang district has produced as much as 168 metric tonnes of lichee this year, compared to last year's 153 metric tonnes, the District Agriculture Knowledge Centre confirmed.
Local farmers have earned millions of rupees by growing lichee.
Farmers in Khotang have grown lichee commercially on 31 hectares of land. This year, Rawabensi Rural Municipality produced 74 metric tonnes of lichee, the highest among the 10 local levels in Khotang.
Officer at the Centre, Sanjay Kumar Pandit, said that Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality produced two metric tonnes, while Halesi Tuwachung produced 20.5 metric tonnes. Jantedhunga Rural Municipality and Diprung Chuichumma also grew a significant quantity of lichee this year, the District Agriculture Knowledge Centre shared.
Lichee grown in Khotang is sold in the local Haat bazaar and other cities, including Kathmandu.
With the good production of lichee here, the local governments in the district have provided lichee saplings for free to further promote its production by encouraging farmers to cultivate lichee.
