KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba has confirmed the safety of all Nepali students in Bangladesh. Minister Rana took to social media this morning to provide an update on the well-being of Nepali students and other Nepalis residing in Bangladesh.
According to her statement, the Nepali Embassy in Dhaka has maintained regular communication with local authorities, college administrations, and Nepali students to ensure their safety, security, and necessary assistance. As protests continue in Bangladesh over politicised admission quotas for government jobs, Minister Rana emphasised that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has made appropriate arrangements for the students' safety and, if needed, their return to Nepal. The Nepali Embassy has been instructed to coordinate these efforts and facilitate travel for those who wish to come home.
On Sunday, 115 Nepali students returned by air, while 305 arrived in the country crossing the Kakarbhitta border point. MoFA officials welcomed 57 Nepali students who arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport on Sunday morning.
To further assist students, a dedicated 'help desk' has been established at the MoFA, and a responsible office has been designated for coordination. The Nepali Embassy in Dhaka remains in close contact with students affected by the violent protests in Bangladesh.
As of Sunday, approximately 1,200 students have returned home from Bangladesh. Local students in Bangladesh continue to protest against the government's employment quota system.
While Bangladeshi authorities have not officially disclosed the number of casualties, at least four local newspapers reported that over 100 people have lost their lives during the protests.
