Cases filed against 38 factories for producing substandard food items

DUMRE, TANAHUN: The Food Technology and Quality Control Division Office, Tanahun has filed cases against 38 factories in connection with the regulation of food hygiene and quality.

In the fiscal year 2023/24, the office filed cases against 38 factories producing substandard food and beverages in violation of the Food Act.

According to the office chief, Jyoti Acharya, 38 factories were found producing substandard products during sample tests collected after monitoring 77 factories.

As per the Food Act, 2023 (1967), any business producing and selling contaminated and substandard food items will face five years' imprisonment or a fine of Rs 50,000, or both.

According to the Food Quality and Hygiene Laws - 2081 BS, which will come into effect on 3 August, anyone producing and selling contaminated food items will be punished with five years' imprisonment or a fine of Rs 500,000, or both.

The office addressed 21 complaints in the last fiscal year. The office has been advising people not to keep food in ink-printed newspapers, not to use synthetic colour in food products, including meat, and not to use banned calcium and carbohydrates to ripen fruits.
