KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) earned Rs 16.93 billion by exporting 1.94 billion units of electricity to India last fiscal year 2023/24.
The NEA sold surplus power at competitive rates on the Indian Energy Exchange's day-ahead and real-time markets and NTPC Vidyut Vypar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) under a mid-term power agreement. NVVN then sold this power to Haryana state in India at an average rate of Rs 8.72 per unit.
Nepal imported electricity worth Rs 16.81 billion last fiscal year, according to the NEA. Approximately 183 billion units were imported from India to meet high domestic demand during the winter season when hydropower production decreases due to reduced water flow in rivers and rivulets. The average rate of imported power during winter was Rs 9.17 per unit.
In comparison, Nepal imported power worth Rs 19.44 billion and exported electricity worth Rs 10.45 billion in the fiscal year 2022/23. NEA's Executive Director, Kul Man Ghising, stated that while power imports will be necessary to meet domestic demand during the winter months for the next few years, the volume of exports is also expected to increase.
