KATHMANDU: The government has decided to permit the use of the social media platform TikTok under certain conditions.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday made this decision, according to Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) had prepared a proposal following a directive from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to treat all social networking sites equally and to draft the necessary legislation.
Meanwhile, a TikTok spokesperson stated, "We are pleased that TikTok has been unblocked in Nepal. We appreciate the Government of Nepal's commitment to ongoing productive dialogue and recognise their concern for the digital experience of the Nepali community." He added, "The creativity and passion of our community have brought joy to households across Nepal and have opened vital economic opportunities for incredibly talented creators and businesses. We are excited to continue enabling Nepali voices and creativity as we work to support the success story of Nepal."
The government had imposed a ban on TikTok in November 2023, citing that its use was contributing to social ills.
