KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced that the government will monitor whether students from impoverished communities are receiving the scholarship grant money allocated to them.
The Prime Minister stated on his social networking site, Facebook, today that this issue will be followed up at all local levels.
PM Oli mentioned that the government has been providing Rs 600 million annually in the budget for this purpose. According to this provision, students (Grades 6-10) from poor families studying in community schools receive Rs 18,000 per head per annum, and Rs 24,000 per head per annum for those studying Science.
"Students from 22 enlisted castes and the non-residential students of marginalised classes studying at community schools in remote and other areas are being provided with between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,500 per student annually as a scholarship grant. 1.55 million students throughout the country will receive scholarships under the non-residential scholarship scheme. Rs 500 million has been allocated for this purpose," PM Oli stated in his Facebook post.
Similarly, he said that a residential scholarship at the rate of Rs 5,000 per student per month is provided to 11,400 students from seven targeted groups, including those from educationally backward communities and students from the most remote mountainous districts.
"The aforementioned scholarship amounts have been transferred as a conditional fiscal grant, calculating the cost per student at every local level. The work procedure related to this has been published on the Ministry of Education's website," Prime Minister Oli said.
