KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) felicitated 21-year-old Palesha Goverdhan, the bronze medallist in Taekwondo at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, in a ceremony on Friday.
Goverdhan received a cash prize of Rs 300,000, while her coach, Kaviraj Negi Lama, and manager, Ramchandra Shrestha, were awarded Rs 125,000 and Rs 75,000 respectively. Goverdhan is the first Nepali athlete to win a medal at the Paralympics.
FNCCI President Chandra Prasad Dhakal, addressing the ceremony, expressed pride and joy in congratulating Goverdhan, her coach, and her manager. He urged FNCCI members and the private sector to support talented athletes like Goverdhan and promote the growth of sports in Nepal. "Nepali youth are brimming with talent," he emphasised, "Our private sector, alongside the government, must play a pivotal role in promoting sports."
Goverdhan's bronze medal in the women's 57 kg K-44 category, achieved by defeating Serbia's Marija Micev 15-8, marks a historic first for Nepal in the Paralympics. She hopes her success will inspire future generations of athletes.
Dhakal highlighted that Goverdhan's victory has set a new benchmark for Nepali athletes on the global stage and is a momentous occasion for Nepal.
