KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Bishnu Prasad Paudel, has stated that the government is committed to enforcing an effective law to address cheque bounce cases.

Speaking at a meeting of the Finance Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday, Finance Minister Paudel noted that cheque bounce incidents were increasing daily, making the enactment of effective laws imperative.

Last year, the Cabinet approved the draft Bill 2080 to amend the Banking Offences and Punishment Act 2064, which was subsequently tabled in Parliament by the then Finance Minister, Prakash Sharan Mahat. Since then, the parliamentary committee has been continuously discussing various amendment proposals to the bill.

The government prepared the bill based on recommendations from the Supreme Court and the Office of the Attorney General, aiming to amend the Banking Offences and Punishment Act in light of the varying legal remedies for cheque bounce cases.

Currently, the HoR Committee is considering different options in this regard.
