KATHMANDU: A delegation of Norwegian lawmakers held a meeting with the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Thursday.
The delegation, led by Ine Eriksen Søreide, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence of the Storting, included Asmund Aukrust, Guri Melby, Ingrid Fiskaa, Sylvi Listhaug, Hårek Elvenes, Ola Borten Moe, Bengt Fasteraune, Trine Lise Sundnes, Nils-Ole Foshaug, Vibeke Rysst-Jensen, and Gro Kolstad Mortvedt. They were welcomed by Raj Kishor Yadav, Chairperson of the International Relations and Tourism Committee, along with other committee members.
In a press statement, the HoR committee described the meeting as the first of its kind between similar parliamentary committees of the two nations, marking a significant step in parliamentary diplomacy. Both sides celebrated the friendly and cooperative relationship between Nepal and Norway.
Discussions covered the formation of parliaments, governance systems, and democratic processes in both countries. Shared values on democracy, human rights, and social justice were highlighted, along with common global agendas such as climate change mitigation and achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The Norwegian lawmakers acknowledged Nepal's contributions to peacekeeping missions and emphasised the importance of promoting cooperation in Nepal's energy sector.
The parliamentary committee expressed its desire to expand mutual cooperation through enhanced parliamentary research, participatory evaluation of delegated legislation, co-learning, exchange of parliamentary practices, and additional technical assistance.
