KATHMANDU: Zambia's non-resident ambassador to Nepal, Percy Patson Chanda, has pledged to exchange technical support for the mining and exploration of minerals in Nepal.
Ambassador Chanda made this commitment during a courtesy call on the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Damodar Bhandari, today.
During the meeting at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Ambassador Chanda highlighted the similar topographical features of Nepal and Zambia, expressing the Zambian government's readiness to collaborate in mining exploration between the two nations.
Minister Bhandari noted that both countries are least developed and landlocked, facing similar challenges and development goals. He emphasised the potential for shared experiences in trade, agriculture, tourism, and the mining industry.
"Nepal has prioritised mineral exploration, and there is potential for cooperation with Zambia, which is more advanced in this sector," Minister Bhandari stated.
The Minister also suggested that Zambia could serve as a strategic base for Nepal to expand its relations within the African continent, benefiting from Nepal's diverse geography and culture.
Ambassador Chanda mentioned that the Zambian mining industry boasts an annual turnover of at least Rs 600 billion and a skilled technical workforce.
"There is significant potential in Nepal's mining and mineral industry. Cooperation between Zambia and Nepal should commence soon, with coordination between the relevant ministries," Ambassador Chanda added.
Director General of the Department of Mines and Geology, Ram Prasad Ghimire, briefed the Zambian ambassador on Nepal's mining sector, according to Ananda Bhatta, Minister Bhandari's private secretary.
