KATHMANDU: Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Bal Ram Adhikari, has committed to establishing a commission within a month to address the issue of landless squatters.
Speaking at the 11th General Assembly of the Asian Farmers' Association in Kathmandu today, Minister Adhikari announced that the ministry is set to amend the law to facilitate the commission's formation.
Minister Adhikari highlighted the necessity of upgrading farmers to ensure national progress. "We are striving to enhance policy and its practical implementation. Given the significant impact of climate change on agriculture, there is an urgent need to focus on climate resilience," he stated.
He further noted that the right to food, enshrined in the constitution, is increasingly challenged by climate change's effects on agriculture. Efforts are underway to uphold this right.
Emphasising the importance of collective action, Minister Adhikari called for farmers across Asia to unite and advocate for the region's sustainable development.
The two-day general assembly has witnessed participation from representatives of 22 farmer-related organisations from 19 countries. The assembly will also elect new leadership for the association, followed by a five-day training session in Nagarkot.
