KATHMANDU: Affectionately known as ‘RB Uncle’, Rash Bihari Rauniar is a revered figure in Nepal's business community. Born in 1946, Rauniar not only witnessed but also significantly contributed to the country's economic transformation. His family's business roots trace back to their time in India, bringing a rich heritage to Nepal.
Rauniar's entrepreneurial journey began during the Rana regime, with his family establishing various businesses, from textiles to clearing and forwarding services. He was a trailblazer in several industries, including chemical fertilisers, department stores, and transportation. His efforts were pivotal in developing Nepal's infrastructure, with notable contributions to hydropower plants and telecommunication networks.
A key figure in negotiations with the World Bank, Rauniar was instrumental in establishing Nepal’s first dry port in Birgunj. He pioneered the operation of the dry port in Birgunj and the Inland Container Port in Biratnagar. Additionally, he played a significant role in drafting the Multimodal Transportation of Goods Act.
