NEW YORK: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that countries responsible for carbon emissions should compensate those that do not emit carbon.

Speaking in New York at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he is leading the Nepali delegation, Prime Minister Oli made this statement during his keynote address at the Parliamentary Forum, 'Financing the Future: Aligning Finance with the Promise of the Paris Agreement,' at the programme on Parliamentarians for a Fossil-Free Future on Saturday.

Highlighting Nepal's efforts in mitigating climate change through zero carbon emissions, he emphasised the need to compensate communities affected by climate change due to emissions from developed countries. He cited the melting of snow in the Himalayas, including Sagarmatha (Mt Everest), as a pressing example.

Prime Minister Oli urged developed nations to increase funding for future climate adaptation, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. "Our future is bright because we are investing in it," he remarked.

Accompanying Prime Minister Oli are his spouse Radhika Shakya, Minister for Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba, Chief Advisor Bishnu Prasad Rimal, Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, and other senior officials.
