KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel affirmed the government's commitment to strengthening workers' rights and advancing the national goal of 'Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali' through robust industrial labour relations.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 26th General Council of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) - Asia Pacific in Kathmandu today, DPM Paudel announced ongoing efforts to adjust minimum wages in line with contemporary demands.
He highlighted the emergence of new workplace challenges, calling for collective action to address them. He also mentioned that workers' issues are globally similar in nature.
Emphasising the constitutional rights to trade union activities and collective bargaining, he reiterated that the right to employment is a fundamental citizen right. The Finance Minister assured that the government is dedicated to ensuring employment rights, social justice, and social security for workers.
DPM Paudel outlined the government's initiatives to enhance the labour force's skills and professionalism. "The government is actively fostering an industrial environment with decent labour relations," he stated, recognising the labour force as a key socio-economic driver.
He also mentioned the government's policy to create ample domestic employment opportunities.
Nepal Trade Union Congress General Secretary Ajay Kumar Rai highlighted the significant losses due to climate change, urging the government to address the needs of daily wage earners.
The two-day event saw participation from the All Nepal Trade Union Federation, Nepal Trade Union Federation, and trade union leaders and activists from the Asia-Pacific region.
