BHADRAPUR: Tea exports from the Mechi Customs Office increased by 36% year-on-year in the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2024/25.

The customs office reported that 6,426 metric tonnes of tea were exported in the first three months. Information Officer Ganapati Kandel at the office stated that the export value rose by more than 50% compared to the same period last year, totalling Rs 1.71 billion.

Aditya Parajuli, President of the Nepal Tea Producers Association, attributed the rise in Nepali tea exports to a decline in production in India. He expressed hope that exports would increase further with government facilitation.

However, the export of cardamom decreased by 49% in the same period. A total of 783 metric tonnes of cardamom was exported, compared to 1,525 metric tonnes in the previous fiscal year.

The Mechi Customs Office also mentioned about increase in the exports of plywood, broom grass (amliso), and veneer sheets during the first three months, while exports of ginger and vegetables declined.
