KATHMANDU: International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) has announced that its agencies are mobilising an emergency fund to support ongoing efforts for flood-affected people in Nepal.
In its immediate response, over 200 Nepal Red Cross staff and volunteers have worked closely with authorities on evacuations, search and rescue operations, and distribution of essential supplies. The IFRC stated that the Red Cross is also involved in clearing roads and restoring access, especially in high-elevation areas where landslides pose significant challenges. So far, the Red Cross has distributed emergency relief items from its prepositioned stocks to nearly 5,000 people. Non-food relief materials, including blankets, tarpaulins, mattresses, hygiene kits, and sleeping bags worth Rs 31.3 million, were distributed to affected communities through the district chapters of the Nepal Red Cross Society.
The IFRC has expressed its determination to make all possible resources available for the communities affected by the worst monsoon rains. "With the additional funds, we aim to focus on providing shelter, water, and sanitation, as well as cash to help communities recover as soon as possible, especially those in the most affected areas from Kathmandu to the adjacent south," stated the IFRC Nepal.
Earlier, IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain announced Rs 90 million in assistance through the IFRC Emergency Fund for communities affected by recent flooding and landslides.
