Disasters claim 191 lives in 10 districts of Bagmati

BAGMATI: As many as 191 people have died in 10 districts of Bagmati Province, excluding Kathmandu Valley, due to disasters triggered by torrential rains and fires during the first three months of the current fiscal year 2024/25. According to the Bagmati Province Police Office in Hetauda, 177 people perished due to floods, landslides, and inundation on September 27 and 28 alone. Of these, 157 were killed in landslides, 11 were washed away by floods, and nine drowned, stated the Office spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Durga Raj Regmi.

During this period, eight individuals were electrocuted, four lost their lives to lightning strikes, and one person each was killed in a fire incident and a wild animal attack. Additionally, 173 people sustained injuries, and 11 are missing since the disaster occurred. Furthermore, 171 concrete houses, 673 mud houses, and 161 sheds were damaged due to natural disasters during this period. The provincial police office reported that 93 vehicles and 20 factories were also damaged, along with 83 schools and 12 government offices in various districts.

Moreover, 48 concrete and suspension bridges were damaged due to floods and landslides during this time. SP Regmi stated that many roads connecting the federal capital Kathmandu were blocked after bridges and roads were washed away, and they are currently being repaired and gradually reopened.
