KATHMANDU: The social media platform 'TikTok' was officially registered with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) on Tuesday.
The popular social media application has been registered in accordance with Section 3 (1) of the Guidelines for Regulation of the Use of Social Media - 2080 BS. According to the guidelines, individuals, companies, or organisations wishing to operate a social media platform must register with the MoCIT.
A meeting of the Council of Ministers on October 24 decided to list TikTok.
Mamata Bastola, information officer and under-secretary at the ministry stated that there was a delay due to Dashain and Tihar festivals and confirmed that the TikTok platform has now been duly listed with the ministry.
The MoCIT issued a statement urging all social networking sites operating in Nepal to register in accordance with the guidelines. Accordingly, along with TikTok, Viber and WeTalk have been registered with the ministry.
"Other social networks are in the process of being enlisted," said Officer Bastola.
