BAKU: President Ramchandra Paudel is set to address COP29 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, today.
The 29th Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) commenced on November 11.
Nepal is attending the annual world climate event with a delegation led by President Paudel, who will address the 'World Leaders' Climate Action Summit'.
President Paudel arrived in Baku on Monday at the invitation of Azerbaijan's President, Ilham Aliyev.
Nepal will hold a separate high-level session chaired by President Paudel on Wednesday, focusing on 'addressing loss and damage caused by climate change in mountain areas', drawing the world's attention to this issue.
The global gathering of some 50,000 participants, including heads of state, ministers, delegates, and climate campaigners, will urge collective initiatives to cope with climate extremes, with a particular emphasis on the roles of developed countries in reducing carbon emissions and renewing their commitment to climate funds. The Nepali delegation will also highlight Nepal's climate challenges, practices, and ambitions regarding climate actions.
The event is witnessing the presence of presidents or vice presidents of 40 countries and prime ministers of 35 countries.
As part of the climate finance discussions, a new collective quantified goal (NCQG) is being deliberated upon, with a special focus on COP29 this year. The conference will conclude on November 20, while President Paudel will return home on November 15.
