KATHMANDU: Nepal is set to start exporting 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh today. This marks the first time in Nepal's history of power trade that electricity is being exported to a country other than India.
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) spokesperson Chandan Kumar Ghosh described it as a historic milestone. With permission from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission of India, the NEA will export electricity via Madhya Pradesh on Friday.
A tripartite agreement among high-level officials from Nepal, India, and Bangladesh was reached on October 3 regarding power trade. The agreement was signed by NEA Executive Director Kul Man Ghising on behalf of Nepal.
