KATHMANDU: Record-breaking Canadian cricket icon Saad Bin Zafar has officially joined the Lumbini Lions for the upcoming Nepal Premier League (NPL) 2024.
As Canada’s first-ever captain at the T20 World Cup in 2024, Zafar brings extensive international experience and leadership to the team, significantly boosting the Lions' prospects this season. With this exciting addition, the Lumbini Lions now have two captains on their roster, setting the stage for an electrifying match ahead.
Zafar, a Pakistan-born Canadian cricketer, has been instrumental in Canada’s cricket journey, making his first-class debut in 2008 and consistently representing the national side in all formats. As a slow left-arm spinner and left-hand batter, Zafar’s all-round abilities make him a formidable presence on the field. He has also showcased his talent on a global stage in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), playing for the St Lucia Zouks.
Zafar holds a unique place in cricket history, becoming the first player in a T20 International (T20I) to deliver a four-over spell without conceding a single run. His record-breaking performance came in November 2021 when he finished with figures of 4-4-0-2 against Panama, an achievement that remains unmatched.
Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Lumbini Lions for NPL 2024, Zafar said, "I’m thrilled to be joining the Lumbini Lions for the Nepal Premier League. I’ve heard great things about the cricketing culture in Nepal, and I’m excited to bring my skills and experience to the team. I look forward to contributing to the Lions' success and connecting with the passionate cricket fans in Nepal."
Ishwar GC, chairman of the Lumbini Lions, shared his excitement about securing Zafar for the upcoming season, stating, "Saad Bin Zafar is a world-class player, and we are honoured to have him as part of our team. His all-round capabilities and leadership experience will undoubtedly strengthen our squad.
