KARNALI: Tourism, agriculture, and medicinal herbs have been identified as key economic boosters in the Karnali region, according to a study report discussed during a stakeholder meeting organised by International IDEA Nepal in Birendranagar on Monday. The report focused on economic growth and potential in Karnali Province.
Khagendra Chamling Rai, Province Programme Officer of IDEA Nepal, stated that the report was based on a periodic plan, economic survey, interactions with key individuals, and inspection visits. "The discussion was held with development partners, active women, industrialists and entrepreneurs, civil employees, civil society members, and politicians to resolve the identified problems collaboratively," he added.
Pramod Bhagat, another Programme Officer at IDEA Nepal, presented on issues such as the provincial government's goal of building an organic Karnali, the golden triangle route, tourism, sustainable agricultural production in lower Karnali, and infrastructure development.
Project Manager Prakash Jha emphasised the importance of the supply chain, noting that ensuring the marketing of local products would help boost citizens' incomes.
Mahendra Jung Shahi, spokesperson at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Planning, highlighted the need for the use of forest resources, a reliable road network, and integrated human settlements for the development of Karnali Province.
Kadga BK, Province Member of the National Rural Municipalities' Federation and Chairman of Chaukune Rural Municipality, stressed the importance of recognising and supporting every profession to establish economic links.
The event also addressed issues such as documentation, infrastructure development, grading of indigenous crops, packaging, marketing of agricultural products, micro-enterprises, and investment in agriculture, medicinal herbs, and tourism.
