KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Bishnu Prasad Paudel, has called for the expansion of social security in the country.

Speaking at a programme organised by the General Federation of Nepali Trade Unions on the occasion of the 7th Social Security Day in the capital on Tuesday, Finance Minister Paudel highlighted that the concept of social security was introduced by the CPN (UML) in Nepal and should be broadened.

"UML introduced the concept of social security and led the campaign to implement and establish it," said UML leader and Finance Minister Paudel.

Reflecting on the contribution-based social security scheme, the Finance Minister stated that the purpose of social security is to fulfil the state's responsibility to its citizens.

He described the contribution-based social security scheme as a unique idea, noting that it would generate enthusiasm among the Nepali working population and provide them with future assurance.

Minister Paudel also pledged to make the social security programme more effective and constructive.
